Historian takes issue with SM's memoirs

JOHOR BARU -- University of Malaya historian Professor Datuk Dr Khoo Kay Kim has said that "rash interpretation of historical fact" by Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew would worsen already strained relations between Malaysia and Singapore, and the SM must stop playing with sentiments by using history to justify himself for his own political interest.

"The several incidents which the Singapore Government said happened in its country were merely his interpretation," he was quoted as saying in Utusan Malaysia yesterday. Prof Khoo said the racial riots in Singapore resulted from misunderstandings between the Chinese and Malays similar to what happened in Malaysia in 1969. He urged Singapore to stop accusations and resolve the issue through dialogue. "History should be used as a lesson to forge better political ties, especially between close neighbouring countries as this can prevent the recurrence of past mistakes," he said. -- New Straits Times
