It is widely stated that Newton (and consequently
the entire English natural philosophy establishment)
believed light consisted of corpuscles in transmission.
I think I read somewhere, however, that Newton was really diffident about the ultimate truth of such a
theory and remained on the fence of 'hypothesis non
fingo'. I think he went to a great deal of trouble
to explain the Newton's rings phenomena with particle
collisions. It was later viewed as an early example
of superposition or interference of waves. Any comments on this?
