Why wasn't Newton at all interested in electricity and magnetism? In fact, the entire seventeenth century seems to have been largely uninterested. Newton risked
censure fiddling with 'alchemie' in his digs at
Cambridge. The eighteenth century made up for lost
time in the phenomenal study of EM. By the time of
J. C. Maxwell, the stage had been set for the first
real upgrade of Newton's mechanics in order to
accommodate electromagnetism, namely relativity theory.
