Prince Hall Masons in the News

Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of Bro. Duke Ellington's birth. The huge body of music that he left, was the most original. Without a doubt he was the most wide-ranging composer in American History. His works includes "Black, Brown and Beige" -(a history of blacks in America, "The Deep South Suite" "Black Beauty," "Harlem Air Shaft" and "A Tone Parallel to Harlem.

Bro. Ellington was a member of Social Lodge No. 1, Washington, D.C. The Duke Ellington School of the Arts is the only public school in the country that bears his name. Started in Washington, D.C. in 1974 the year of his death, its graduates are in the American Ballet Theater, in movies, on stage and on the professional jazz scene. Former Los Angles Mayor Bro. Bro Kweisa Mfume, President and CEO of the NAACP was arrested on the steps of the United States Supreme Court, when nearly 1,000 civil rights and labor activists converged on the court, united in anger over the failure of the justices to hire more than a handful of minorities as law clerks. Fewer than 2% of the 394 law clerks hired by the justices during their entire tenure were African-Americans. Bro Mfume of Mount Olive Lodge No. 25, Baltimore Maryland. was arrested when he tried to deliver resumes of minority law clerk candidates. Retiring after 30 years in the U. S. The Prince Hall Mason of the Year - 1962
To the Masonic Service Association

First let it be stated that the heading under which this appreciation is written must not be taken to imply that recognition of the distinguished services of the subject is in any sense limited to his (Masonic) Fraternity. A reliable poll of responsible opinion both in and out of the Order will show by the unanimous judgment that the Prince Hall Mason of the Year (1962) is Judge Thurgood Marshall 33" . For a half century prior to the school desegregation case it had been generally assumed that the Plessy v Ferguson doctrine of "Separate but Equal" permanently fixed the constitutional status of African-American citizens. This concept of second class citizenship for Blacks under the Constitution might have had a longer life if even that concept had been followed in good faith. But for flagrant deviation this half-a-loaf formula might have gone a longer time without challenge. Came a Supreme Court and Bro. Thurgood Marshall to whom the great pronouncements on human citizenship right were more than a mass of pious platitudes. The rest is history. Judge Marshall's devotion to the cause of African-American rights has been for him a veritable passion. His appointment to the high place which he was to hold lay on the table of the United States Senate eleven months awaiting confirmation. Outlasting his foes was no new experience for him. That is what he has been doing in 1933 when the Law School of Howard University commissioned him and sent him forth as a minister of justice. A truly great advocate and supremely modest after the manner of all great and devoted men, he exemplified in life the old saying that there is scarcely any limit to the good which a talented man can do if he does not spend too much time trying to get the credit for it. (Taken from the Winter Bulletin, February-March 1963 issue of the official organ of the United Supreme Council, A.A.S.R, Northern Jurisdiction). As reported in the August issue of Phylaxis Notes there remains some in American Freemasonry who are insensitive to African-Americans, who prefer to push a second class citizenship on Prince Hall Freemasons. The Masonic Service Association removal of the name of Bro. Thurgood Marshall from a list of Freemasons who served in the Supreme Court remains an insult to the 300,000 Prince Hall Freemasons who respect the Associate Justice and Past Minister of State of the United Supreme Council 33" A.A.S.R., Southern Jurisdiction, PHA, USA., and each chance we get we will remind the MSA of this unforgivable abuse. The Phylaxis Society has asked its Baltimore Doric Chapter to contact the author of the article "Supreme Court Justices Who Were Freemasons", Paul Bessel and register our feelings on the matter.

Prince Hall Family Support Center

Missouri Department of Social Services makes it possible for families to obtain a wide variety of health and human services at one location. All the agencies housed in the center work together to ensure that the needs of each family are addressed. Locating this mix of both state and private-sector agencies in one building represents a new way of doing business. This collaborative effort between diverse agencies is a unique concept for providing integrated services to families within their community. Beyond its response to health and human service need, the center is involved in the development of the community and local neighborhood. The center provides a meeting place for community forums, workshops and other activities. In addition to these services, Prince Hall Family Support Center, which is located in St. Louis, offers free legal counseling, free computer training, employment security, social security administration. Its services include adult learning center, child fatality review program, child support enforcement, children's services, clear view-c-star, comprehensive health clinic, family court juvenile division, fortress outreach, Missouri division of aging, Missouri mentoring, office of youth development, parents' fair share, regional hospital dialysis unit, sexually transmitted disease clinic, and many other programs. The Arts Happens Committee is in the process of creating a historical area in its facility to raise the public awareness of the many contributions made to our society by Prince Hall. Like the Phylaxis Society they sponsor a art competition for area elementary and High School children, while the Phylaxis Society sponsors an art competition for the students at the Prince Hall Elementary School in Philadelphia. The Prince Hall Family Support Center is located at 4411 N. Newstead; St. Louis, MO. 63115.
