Annual Review 1998-99

Extract from the President’s introduction

This year has seen two significant landmarks. Among the 42 new Fellows elected was the 8000th to join the Society in our 339 year history. The list of signatures in our Charter Book documents the contribution of the UK and Commonwealth to the advancement of knowledge at the very highest level, and we can all feel proud of the achievements represented in the roll of 8000 Fellows.

The second landmark concerns money: It is now 150 years since Parliament first voted money to the Society to help its work of supporting scientific research. This vote recognised the Society’s unique role as an independent body able to identify and foster excellence in research. That role remains at the heart of our activities. The original Parliamentary Vote was £1000. It stayed at that level until 1876, when it was raised to £5000. It now stands at £25million, which is used for the Society’s core work in promoting science.
